Evaluation - Activity 7

Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Preliminary Task

In this preliminary task we filmed Chris and Matt having a quick conversation. In this short space of time we decided to experiment with different camera shot to see what looks good. We have included over the shoulder shots, establishing shot, medium shot, close up and match on action we also use a long shot of matt walking down the stairs at the end of the conversation. We also tried other techniques in this preliminary task included the black and white effect nearer the end and we also added sound at the end but for some reason it doesnt play on youtube. In our Final two minute opening scene we used two simple rules and we stuck to them; 180 degree rule and match on action. Both of these can be viewed on our final video several posts below.

Comparisons

Both shots above show match on action as a character walks through the door. The one on the right is from our preliminary task and the one on the left is from our two minute opening, Detainment. The first thing you notice is the quality between the two, the one from detainment is better quality because we have tried many different way to films this shot and different techniques to improve quality. The shot on the right is a simple easy shot looking straight on and can get away with some mistakes with match on action due to the big doors and not being able to see the other side. Whereas the shot from detainment is at a more difficult angle meaning the match on action from the previous shot must be near perfect in order to look good.

The two shots in the above scree grab show two close up shots. The one on the right being the one from the preliminary task and the one on the left being from our film Detainment. The one on the right is a simple rather boring close up view looking down on the phone but the quality is rather poor as it was hand held and rather shaky. The one from detainment was used with a tripod so the quality is better it is also and an interesting angle which is different and it shows the Shaun struggling to get the door open.

This is the over the shoulder shot. This is one of the most popular shots used in many films when someone is having a conversation with another. Once again the one on the left is better quality than the one from the preliminary task as the tripod has been used once again. You can also see more of what is happening in the detainment shot and it could almost be an over the shoulder establishing shot as it is giving the audience a view of what the room looks like and both characters.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

We have used many different software, tools and technology in constructing and completing our two minute opening scene for our film, Detainment. listed below are the stuff we have used;

School/Home computers - To edit, upload and research stuff on our blogs and other software.

Video Camera & Tape - Both of these where supplied by the school and we used these to film and record our two minute opening scene.

Tripod - This was used a lot and enabled us to film a good steady shot and enhance the viewing for the audience as well as helping us create interesting angles and movement.

Kitchen Knife & Fake blood - We used these for our murder scene. The knife was provided by the school along with a pipette to hold the fake blood so we could perform our cutting scene.

Memory Stick - This was very important as it allowed us to transfer files from home to school and via versa. It also allowed us to take the finished two minute scene home and upload it from there as the school computers wouldn't upload the video.

Adobe - This was one of the most important things, Adobe Premier Elements 8. We used this software at school to edit our opening scene and add music to it. We also used Adobe photoshop to create scree grabs in earlier Evaluation activities.

Blogger - This is the website that allowed us to create our blogs and present our research and all of our work to teachers, other students and the whole world by a click of the mouse.

Youtube - Without Youtube we would of found it difficult to upload our two minute opening scene to any website for everyone to see. We also where able to get other videos from there that might of been part of our research. Lastly a tool on Youtube allowed us to add caption on to our final video to let viewers know what we thought was best from each scene and what wasn't so good.

School Premises - This allowed us to film our opening scene without many distractions and when ever we wanted to. It also allowed us to move equipment from one place to another with easy as well as not losing any equipment, say if we where filming outside of school.

How did you attract/address you audience?

Here is our final film but we have added captions, telling you what we think what different part would attract to our target audience.

Evaluation - Activity 4

who would be the audience for your media product?

From research about other films similar to ours, a horror, we have been able to gather information about who our niche market are. I have used a web site called, Pearl and dean. This has helped me look at same genre films to ours and who where their biggest audience and who they aimed their film at. The film 'Halloween', which is a certificate 15 focused on the ages 15-24, 60% being male and 40% being female. This is the same with another horror film, 'The Unborn' who also focused on being 15-24 years old. Looking at this research, it helped us decide who we aimed our film at.

The picture above is Daniel 21years old and enjoys life. He is working as a mechanic and enjoys going and and partying and just having a good time with his mates. He enjoys music such as Drum n Bass, Garage and Jungle music and wears fresh clothing that his age group would wear in today's world. This would include such brands as, Fred Perry, Lyle and Scott, Original Penguin, Franklin & Marshall and would shop in such shops as Topman. He enjoys many different kind of media but in particular T.V. He watches such series as Shameless, The Inbetweeners and music channels like, MTV and Kiss. To perhaps help our film appeal to Daniel we have included branded clothes that are worn by Shaun the victim and throughout the whole film other people would wear noticeable branded clothing. We could of also added in a clip of a soundtrack when introducing Shaun into our film for the first time which also could of helped appeal to people such as Daniel.
